Hello dear blog. I know it's been around 7 months since we last met. You know something, blog? You, are one heck of a diary that contains all my memories for 7 years. I know, I know that I have been inconsistent in my updates but hey, I still come right back to you no matter how you change your appearances, ya?
Yeah, so many moments depicted here, both happy and sad. You know, blog? I think you were meant to be a rant blog if I remember correctly. Haha but I remember all those times where I could chat you up, write you a long post and left it all hanging. Just like all the bridges I've built up painstakingly just to be burnt down in the end. Life is amazing, isn't it?
You see, blog, all those amazing people whom I've met in my life, they've left a mark on you too, I'm sure. And being awake at this time does little to help put them away inside me. I've sacrificed a few to get to where I am today, but I'm not all that proud of it. No one does. But I'm also not saying that I detest the outcome either. What I'm saying is, what if life played out differently for me? I would love to have the best of both worlds if I ever had a try at it. But right now, I'm contented with what I have and what I've given up, contented that my head's been given some say in this and also that the others will be living off a better life without my intrusion. I'm thankful, really. To them, and to you, blog, for being at my side at some point in life.

IA's been really fun thus far. Though it's really restricted and all but nevertheless I do get some joy with my fellow interns in there. Imagine setting up a pantry in our very own office! Not forgetting to buy oranges for our supervisors nxt week. =]

Almost got knocked down just now. Grrrrr... stupid driver.
i was travelling straight across the cross junction on the 2nd lane,
after passing the yellow box (now at the pedestrian crossing),
the silver car waiting at the slip road started to turn out!
HELLO. please use ur brain, i will take less den a second to reach u, y still bother turning out?!
Apparently, the driver didnt even check his blind spot or even bother to turn to check for any traffic from the main road. U're supposed to give way to ME!
He turned out to the 1st lane of the 2 lanes somemore! In order to avoid him, i turned out to the right even as he continued to swerve right.

close to banging each other.
I couldnt even honk in time until i was safer after the apex of my swerve.
Urgh, totally disgusted by Singaporean drivers.

long and eventful day today at the CCA open house.
i popped an amplifier and had to travel down allll the way to sim lim to repair it.
other times i was jus stoning at booths and explaining stuff.
but not bad! KH: Birth by Sleep to accompany me allllll night long. =D

Post Internship/Bintan, Hello Holidays!!!

Ships
Ships float, ships sink, they sail with the wind, they drift apart.
It's understandable.
Been hearing stories all life long bout setbacks and problems with such -ships, i guess I've pretty much grown adapted to it.
At the end of the day, no matter what negative emotions i feel, no matter what sadness overcomes me, I'm all alone.
Meaning,
I'm fine being alone.
I'm fine with no friends.
I'm fine with no family.
I used to think that i was disposable because of this. But right now, it's not that i dun care or anything, but just that i accept the truth and move on with a clear conscience.
Besides, who needs reliance on friends or family? Chuck them all away and learn to live life independently.

Why can’t ‘programmers’ program?
"I am very disappointed with NUS’s SoC’s IS’s adminstration. Very.
Now, I can understand why Dr Lai Kok Fung and Dr Bernard Leong said at the AP day’s discussion that SoC is not producing real men. They are not interested in producing the next generation of IT talents. Instead what SoC, at least the IS dept seems to be interested in, is to produce the next batch of wayang experts, and hell, it’s starting to resemble SMU already.
Case in point, IS/EC majors are not allowed to take CS1101S. What the hell? So the school has decided to force all IS and EC majors to take the standard JavaSchools programming modules. Why? It’s not like CS1101S is easier than CS1010. I’ve seen A’s from CS1101(the previous version of the CS1010 route) who are unable to do recursion. Now compare to the entire CS1101S class who is able to use recursion on most problems. And by denying the students from taking up a much more challenging module, is the IS dept really interested in the interests of the students? I personally was an IS student, and thankfully, i’m out.
I still remembered, the first IS module that I took, the prof was telling us how he was going to teach us how to climb up the corporate ladder and be a good employee. Nothing about doing things worth doing or something real. That guy won the teaching excellence award. I pulled out from the module after 1 lecture.
It is very disturbing when you see a large number of your seniors being unable to code despite being in NUS SoC. And graduating without ever learning how to code. As the supposedly premier IT faculty in at least ASEAN, I think the base standard for graduation should be being able to code. And I don’t mean coding some hardcore stuff like the Extended Euclidean algorithm(we cover that in CS1101S by the way). All I’m asking for, is the students to be able to have the mental capacity to come up with a recursive solution to calculate factorial under 5 min. Or even how to implement OOP on real world problems. Actually, on hindsight, the Extended Euclidean algorithm isn’t exactly that hard.
By the way, the solution to factorial(recursive) is

Back to topic. Is SoC doing the right thing by restricting students from taking harder modules, and watering down the syllabus? I don't think so. In the new syllabus, database(CS2102) is no longer required. While I believe that students should not learn things only from a module, at the same time, a large majority of students require the existence of a module to learn things. Which is why database is essential. Now with database out of the picture, I can picture a few shocked employees a few years down the road when they realise the new batch of SoC graduates are unable to manage databases. I'm praying hard that they did not water down programming languages, after the demotion from a level 3 module to level 2.
And with 3 semesters to study basic programming, 1 more than previously, one wonders what the hell the administration is doing. Even in JC, we are expected to finish up to OOP within 7 months. Are they saying SoC undergrads can't do that? Yes, there have been many people saying that some people just need more time to learn, and given more time to adjust, they will be able to catch up with the rest. However, is that really the case? A paper, titled "The camel has 2 humps" claims otherwise.
The paper is a very good read. Honestly, it isn't a dry as some of the other papers we see around. I actually read the whole thing. I'll quote some of the stuff they brought up below.

From experience it appears that there are three major semantic hurdles which trip up novice imperative programmers. In order they are:
• assignment and sequence;
• recursion / iteration;
• concurrency.
Few programmers ever reach the concurrency hurdle, which is the highest of the three, and very high indeed. Recursion is conceptually difficult, and the proper treatment of iteration is mathematically complicated. Assignment and sequence, on the other hand, hardly look as if they should be hurdles at all: storage of / remembering information and doing one thing after another are part of everyday patterns of life and thought, and you might have expected (as at first do most teachers) that students’ experience could be analogised into some kind of programming expertise. Not so: it is a real hurdle, and it comes at the very beginning of most programming courses.

YAYNESS!
i've just updated my NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GS to the extreme latest driver dated last week (beta though) and I've noted the temps are dropping, and the fan doesnt spin as fast as it does! so, now it's extremely quieter!
Argh, I absolutely can't try it out on the games i have in my laptop while I'm still here in my office. Gian...
Seems like my old driver version of 7.11.15.7609 is dated 2008? It's the official OEM one though. Now's 2010 already and NEC obviously doesnt update their drivers (along with most other big brands). After a few hours of research and version testing, mine's now version 8.17.12.5896 dated 5th July 2010! ^^
Seems like I have to personally d/l those drivers which doesnt seem to be digitally signed by Microsoft but at least it's from NVIDIA's wbbie itself. Time to check out on my SD card reader drivers. =]

Tachophobia
Tachophobia or the fear of speed is actually one of the extraordinary, most common phobias affecting or afflicting countless people nowadays.
Tachophobia, just like some other phobias, can badly affect any human life in particular. Normally, a person with tachophobia experiences great fear and some other quite similar emotions such as dread, terror, alarm and panic though he or she is aware that his or her fears are unreasonable or absurd.
Thus, causing him or her to be away from experiencing the fun and thrill of long travels and some long outing trips.
Symptoms of Tachophobia
Phobias or extreme fears like tachophobia can actually lead to a variety of disturbing symptoms such as dizziness, shaking, heart palpitations, excessive sweating, nausea, breathlessness, speech and thinking problems, feeling sick, and even fear of dying.
In cases where the fear experienced becomes more severe, additional symptoms may also be felt. Symptoms just like full blown anxiety or panic attack, sense of detachment from reality and immediate loss of control or temperament.
If you go to an amusement park what do you hear when you stand in line at the roller coaster? Screaming. Some riders will scream because they love the adrenaline rush while others genuinely want to be free of the bars holding them in. There are instances where riders will lose bladder control, vomit and retreat into a fetal position in response to the fear they find themselves in.

An inability to concentrate on anything, but the fear
Dry mouth
Air hunger
Trembling
Panic attacks
Screaming or crying
Feelings of dread and hopelessness
Sometimes there is no way to predict how an individual will respond to fear until they are confronted with it. The above symptoms are simply based on general responses from those who fear speed.
Possible Causes of Tachophobia
Normally, people acquire fear of speed or tachophobia from some traumatic events or experience that have happened in the past. At times, from some brain irregularities or chemical imbalance.
There are also some studies telling that development of phobias is due to the influence of media vehicles like films and television shows having presence of speedy cars and some relative accidents.
It could have been an accident in which two vehicles traveling at a significant speed hit each other. It could have been a fear reaction to a roller coaster ride or it could be something that was observed in others who have the fear of speed.
The root cause is likely the fear of losing control. This fear indicates that there should always be safety and control in every situation. Speed often leaves someone empty when it comes to the feelings associated with safety.

Phobias or extreme fears like tachophobia can actually lead to a variety of disturbing symptoms such as dizziness, shaking, heart palpitations, excessive sweating, nausea, breathlessness, speech and thinking problems, feeling sick, and even fear of dying.
In cases where the fear experienced becomes more severe, additional symptoms may also be felt. Symptoms just like full blown anxiety or panic attack, sense of detachment from reality and immediate loss of control or temperament.
If you go to an amusement park what do you hear when you stand in line at the roller coaster? Screaming. Some riders will scream because they love the adrenaline rush while others genuinely want to be free of the bars holding them in. There are instances where riders will lose bladder control, vomit and retreat into a fetal position in response to the fear they find themselves in.

Sometimes there is no way to predict how an individual will respond to fear until they are confronted with it. The above symptoms are simply based on general responses from those who fear speed.
Possible Causes of Tachophobia
Normally, people acquire fear of speed or tachophobia from some traumatic events or experience that have happened in the past. At times, from some brain irregularities or chemical imbalance.
There are also some studies telling that development of phobias is due to the influence of media vehicles like films and television shows having presence of speedy cars and some relative accidents.
It could have been an accident in which two vehicles traveling at a significant speed hit each other. It could have been a fear reaction to a roller coaster ride or it could be something that was observed in others who have the fear of speed.
The root cause is likely the fear of losing control. This fear indicates that there should always be safety and control in every situation. Speed often leaves someone empty when it comes to the feelings associated with safety.

alright!
finally found a gd deal online at taobao for my mouse.
its 112rmb, converted to SGD it shd b ard S$22!
super cheap! considering it sells in sg for about 50 to 70?
yeap, am planning to get tat one with e help of my Chinese fren from China.
cant wait to grasp it in my hands. ^^
considering my mouse is rather chui alr coz of the loose wire connection,
this would b a serious awesome upgrade. =D
